When it comes to high-altitude trekking, hydration is critical, I’ve seen even seasoned trekkers often underestimating it. At higher altitude, air become colder and drier, pulling moisture from your body with each breath. You may not feel thirsty but your body is loosing water at much faster rate. Staying hydrated, a small habit that makes a big difference. Here are 5 hydration tips for high-altitude.
1. Start Early
Begin hydration well before you reach high-altitude. Let’s say, if you’re catching a bus to Manali and next day you’re starting your trek to Hampta Pass. Begin your hydration journey the moment you begin your bus journey. Starting your trek fully hydrated gives you a head start on acclimatisation.2.No To Coffee & Alcohol
Ah, remember in the first paragraph I was talking about seasoned trekkers underestimating it. I was talking about me. Strong coffee in the morning makes you feel like a superhero trekker and a celebratory drink at altitude sounds romantic. But the reality? They’re dehydrating as heck. Say no to alcohol on treks completely and limit caffeine to one cup. Save the drinks for telling epic stories of the mountains when you’re back at base.3. Drink Regularly, Not Just When Thirsty
Don’t be like that friend who refuses to ask for direction untill getting lost. Thirst is often a late indicator of dehydration. Make a habit of sipping water every 25-30 mins, even if you’re not thirsty.4. Electrolyte Are New BFF
Water’s great but without minerals, it’s like a cake without frosting. Though stream water on mountain is mineral rich, though adding a pinch of salt or electrolyte can help replace lost minerals (yes, they vanish as you sweat). Just don’t take it in access or you’ll feel bloated.5. Drink Luke Warm Water
No one wants to drink icy-cold water in sub-zero temperature. Try keeping a thermos of warm water with you. This way, when the freezing winds hit, you’ll have something that doesn’t make you wonder why you ever left your cozy bed in the first place.
