Hampta Pass Weather Forecast

The Hampta Pass trek is where Himachal quietly shifts from green to grey. On one side, you walk through Kullu’s dense pine forests, grassy meadows, and peaceful riverside camps. On the other, Lahaul opens up with its dry, rugged, and wide landscapes. This sharp change in scenery happens in just a few days, which is what makes this route so memorable.

Expect a mix of easy trails and sections that demand focus. Rocky climbs, slippery descents, and stream crossings are part of the journey. During monsoon, the clouds move fast and rain can hit anytime, so a poncho or rain jacket is a must. Nights are cold, especially at Shea Goru, where the wind bites hard after sunset. Thermal layers, a windproof jacket, and proper trekking shoes can make a big difference.

Snow is likely in early June, especially while crossing the pass. That’s when you’ll need microspikes and gaiters, usually provided by the trek operators. Once the snow melts, by mid or late July, the landscape around camps like Jwara turns lush with wildflowers. It feels like a hidden valley tucked between mountains, bursting with colour for just a few weeks.

There’s a barefoot river crossing the morning after Shea Goru, so floaters or sturdy sandals are necessary. Avoid flip-flops. The water is glacier-fed and freezing cold, but manageable if you’re prepared. Always walk slow, follow your trek leader, and keep a set of dry clothes ready in a waterproof liner. These small things keep the experience smooth on what is otherwise one of Himachal’s most scenic short treks.
